As the largest women-owned intellectual property IP firm in the US (based on the number of issued patents)\, McCoy Russell LLP has been closely watching the participation of women as inventors. The ability to protect innovation through patents is a key driver to obtaining funding\, and statistics show that a significant gender gap still exists in both funding and inventorship even though the biotechnology industry has increased the number of women scientists. \nIt is in this light that McCoy Russell will demonstrate our developed approaches to support organizations in enhancing women participation at all levels\, including in brainstorming\, invention submission\, etc. \nAbout the Speakers \nAnna McCoy is a founding partner of the intellectual property law firm\, McCoy Russell LLP which is one of the largest women-owned intellectual property firms in the Pacific Northwest issuing over 750 patents in 2018. For the last eighteen years\, she has represented both local clients and Fortune 500 companies and has extensive experience counseling entrepreneurs and start-up companies in developing and protecting their intellectual property portfolios. Her patent and trademark experience includes expertise in numerous sectors\, including medical device technologies\, biochemical and chemical technologies\, battery technologies\, and imaging technologies as well as experience in technologies related to software development\, AI\, machine learning and the Internet of Things. Anna further has specific specialty practices in design protections and branding\, including tradedress. \nAnna received her J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland where she was a member of the Journal of Small and Emerging Business Law as well as a Business Law Roundtable Scholar. She also did graduate work at Oregon Health Science University with a focus in pharmacology and electrophysiology. Anna is active in the local legal community and is a member of the Oregon Women’s Lawyers Association and the Oregon Patent Law Association as well as having previously been a chair on the Oregon State Bar Intellectual Property Executive Committee. \n  \n  \nJanina Malone joined McCoy Russell LLP in 2017. Starting in Atlanta in 2001\, she has helped start-ups\, universities\, and Fortune 500 companies identify and protect their intellectual property\, helping them develop patent strategies and maximize their portfolios for both internal growth and as part of a larger exit strategy. Her patent preparation and prosecution experience includes biotechnology\, chemistry\, medical devices\, mechanical devices\, machine learning\, data analytics\, and digital health. \nJanina received her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law\, her Masters in Biology from Washington University in St. Louis\, and has continued to audit university classes in emerging technologies. Janina is active in the local start-up community\, currently serving as a Biomentor for the Oregon Bioscience Incubator and on the Digital Health Committee for the Technology Association of Oregon.
