SUMMARY:PIE Event: Really Working from Home: How to get the most out of your now remote employment
DESCRIPTION:With the onset of quarantine and social distancing\, many of us have been settling into a somewhat surreal semblance of remote work. It doesn’t feel quite right. But we’re doing our best to fake it. And because of that we’re not really working from home.   \nPIE wants to help. That’s why we’ve assembled a panel of PIE mentors: one who helps lead a successful remote only company\, one who has worked as a remote employee for a decade while working alongside an online school student\, and one who has assembled the most fervent community of remote workers on the planet — all while leading a remote company\, himself.  \nJoin these incredibly insightful PIE mentors for an open and honest discussion about how to be truly successful as a remote employee. And how to manage remote teams. And deal with all the life that happens when that life all happens in a single place.  \nAny question you’ve had about working from home\, these folks are going to be able to answer. \nInvited panelists \nBarrett Brooks\, ConvertKit\nCami Kaos\, Automattic\nDarren Buckner\, Workfrom

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Negotiate Like a Boss by Being Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Martin Medeiros will introduce you to a research-based approach that teaches you how to effectively negotiate just by being yourself. \nNote: This Lunch & Learn is a virtual event\, using Zoom Meeting. After registration\, you will receive a link to join the meeting. Grab your lunch in the comfort of your home or office\, and join us! \nRegister here! \nNot knowing what to do\, anxiety and even fear may confront us when we must negotiate. Often\, the negotiator “type” is viewed as a haggler\, a deceiver\, even a manipulator. Decades of research show that effective negotiators do not exhibit these traits. What if there was a research-based process that lets you negotiate just by being yourself? And what if this approach is proven to get your needs met more often than not? Introduce yourself to the systems approach to negotiation from Martin Medeiros\, who adopted this approach over 25 years of law practice. \nMartin is a keynote speaker on negotiation\, acts as a judge in the ABA Negotiation Competition\, delivers the weekly “Persuasion Lab” podcast and authored 5 books on negotiation\, persuasion\, and influence. This interactive session delivers immediately actionable steps you can take. \nAbout the speaker: \nMartin Medeiros started his research in 1999 to remove frustration and stress experienced with deals and disputes. He mastered methods for determining objective probabilities with the best strategies in transactions and disputes needed in the information economy. But this was not enough. His research then turned on tempering this objective focus on human behavior\, which can be subjective and irrational. Now the model is complete. \nSpeaking at start-ups\, Fortune 500 companies\, Am Law 100 firms\, trade association meetings\, strategic investment associations\, universities\, non-profits\, and healthcare providers\, Martin also presented to hundreds of attorneys as a Board Member of the Oregon Law Institute at Lewis and Clark College of Law from 2003-2015 and as Chair of the Technology Law Section of the Oregon State Bar. Martin’s skill as a keynote speaker and teacher were forged on the anvil of this unique experience. \nMartin Medeiros takes the stage with stories and humor. Anyone can lose bad negotiation habits\, avoid losses and build value – if you know how. Martin has closed thousands of deals and disputes using a systematic approach. While we do have proprietary tools\, we also publish our data and teach what we do to increase positive negotiation outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:March 18\, 2020\n11:30 AM-1:00 PM\nRegistration Price\nTAO Member: $5\nNon-Member: $12.50\nVIRTUAL EVENT\n \nPortland\, OR\n \nWHAT YOU WILL LEARN \n“I will never apologize for changing the approach or strategy when the facts change.”  – Henry Paulson \nThe wonderful strategic retreat in the Fall of 2019\, seems like an eternity ago.  Everything just seemed to fall in place and we were looking forward to an exciting 2020. \nInstead\, we have been blasted by fear … \nCoronavirus\nStock Market Crash\nOil Plummets to Multi-Year Lows\nTravel Bans\nTrade shows are getting canceled and our focus has moved away from our core strategies to employee health\, and even this event has been moved to a webinar.  \nFor better or worse\, crisis situations are when Strategic Planning\, Focus and Execution are more important than ever.  \nOrganizations thrive or fail in fear based environments.  The ones that thrive learn how to focus on what matters most to gain market share or increase impact in their ecosystem\, and those who become paralyzed often fail. \nOn Wednesday\, March 18th\,  join the Technology Association of Oregon and Carl Cox of 40 Strategy for our first virtual Lunch & Learn from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. \nAttendees will sign off with a renewed sense of purpose on how to adjust their Strategic Plan to what is most important and provide team members with a sense of confidence that they will get through the most difficult of times.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Aus-Trial-ia: Benefits of Running Early Phase Clinical Trials in Australia
DESCRIPTION:This talk will describe the speed\, cost and quality considerations and advantages of conducting early phase clinical trials in Australia. Of particular note are the Clinical Trial Notification (CTN) program which allows for patients to be dosed within 8-10 weeks of document submission to the Ethics Committee (EHRC) for trial approval as well as the R&D tax rebate scheme from the Australian government. \nThere are several advantages to the CTN program\, including reduced documentation requirements for study approval\, fast review and approval\, and reduced release testing requirements. \nTrials conducted in Australia utilizing these more efficient processes meet international quality standards and are often the basis for IND and/or CTA fillings for Phase II trials in the US and EU. \nThank you to PCI Pharma Services for sponsoring this event.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Find and Equip Lab Space Quickly and Cost Effectively
DESCRIPTION:At some point every successful company faces the challenge of their physical working space no longer meeting their needs. Maybe the space isn’t large enough to meet demand\, or perhaps business has evolved in a direction no longer served by the original facility. So how does one go about finding new space? Hire a broker? An architect? A contractor? All three? If so\, then when? And how do you make sure your business needs are met quickly and cost effectively? All of these questions follow the often overt realization that your space no longer works. The problem is that acquiring lab space is not simple. Most people who have been through the process will tell you it takes far more time than expected\, and in the case of your company outgrowing its facility\, that is time you can’t afford. The other challenge that is often underestimated at first is the complexity of fitting out that lab space. \nAt this program we will talk though the steps needed to find\, acquire and fit-out lab space. We will discuss the role of brokers and their limitations; the timeline associated with finding and securing space; and the ins and outs of permitting and tenant improvement. We will touch on the complexities of developing lab space that make finding the raw shell area difficult\, including zoning\, mechanical systems\, and occupancy types. We will talk about the time it typically takes from the decision to move or expand\, to the new facility being fully operational. Finally\, we will cover the management of tasks that are not typically handled by the broker\, architect or contractor. \nCurrie & Brown is a global construction consultancy that is specializes in helping owners and tenants manage capital improvement projects. We are currently employed in Portland and worldwide by some of the largest bio-tech and high-tech companies to ensure that their new spaces are brought online as quickly and cost effectively as possible. We look forward to the opportunity to share some of what we have learned to help you in your eventual endeavors to find new space. \nThank you to Currie & Brown for sponsoring this event. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - OHSU Landscape with Peter Barr-Gillespie
DESCRIPTION:Come hear how OHSU’s research and innovation landscape has changed. \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout this Event\nOHSU has undergone significant changes at the leadership level in recent years. Among those changes\, Peter Barr-Gillespie was named as OHSU’s chief research officer\, and he has restructured his office\, now named OHSU Research and Innovation. In addition\, in response to an external review of the innovation landscape at OHSU\, he launched a new office\, OHSU Collaborations and Entrepreneurship\, which is headed by Aditi Martin. One of Martin’s principal goal is to ensure that business development activities at OHSU\, which occur in several offices in different units\, are coordinated across the university. OHSU Technology Transfer\, led by Andrew Watson\, remains relatively unchanged from its structure within the former Technology Transfer and Businses Development (TTBD) office. \nBarr-Gillespie will discuss these changes to OHSU’s research and innovation landscape\, and review OHSU’s yearlong strategic planning process. He will be joined by Martin and Watson\, who will elaborate on the new structure for technology transfer\, collaborations\, and entrepreneurship. \nAbout the speaker \nPeter G. Barr-Gillespie \, PhD – Chief Research Officer and Executive Vice President Peter G. Barr-Gillespie\, Ph.D.\, is a professor in the department of otolaryngology\, an affiliated scientist with the Vollum Institute\, and the chief research officer and executive vice president for OHSU. He is also the scientific director of the Hearing Restoration Project\, funded by the Hearing Health Foundation. \nBarr-Gillespie received his BA in Chemistry from Reed College in 1981\, and his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Washington in 1988. He spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow with Jim Hudspeth\, PhD\, first at the University of California San Francisco\, and then at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. In 1993\, he started his independent research program at Johns Hopkins University\, in the Department of Physiology. He moved to OHSU in 1999\, achieving the rank of professor in 2003. He was the associate vice president for basic research from 2014-2017\, the interim senior vice president for research from 2017-2018\, and was appointed chief research officer and executive vice president in 2019. \nBarr-Gillespie oversees the research mission at OHSU\, which exceeded $486 million during the 2019 fiscal year and includes the entire spectrum of science\, from molecules to populations. His role is to provide research infrastructure and support\, from fiscal management to shared instrumentation to long-term strategy. He also oversees nine of OHSU’s research centers and institutes\, including the Vollum Institute\, the Oregon National Primate Research Center\, the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute\, and the Advanced Imaging Research Center. \nBarr-Gillespie has an active\, well-funded basic science research program\, the goal of which is to understand how the sensory cells of the inner ear\, hair cells\, detect mechanical signals like sound and head movements. The lab’s approach is molecular\, and addresses two of the most important questions in the field. First\, what is the molecular mechanism for mechanotransduction? And second\, how does the hair cell assemble the hair bundle so that its multiple levels of organization are produced and maintained? His research program continues during his tenure as a senior administrator at OHSU.
