Serving grades 2-12 in the areas of science\, technology\, engineering\, art\, and math since 1983\, we have paved the way for students to build their confidence and explore topics of interest to them outside the school day. \nIn 2021\, Saturday Academy vowed to bring more programming directly to underserved and underrepresented students through our Saturday 2 You (SA2U) program helping provide free STEAM classes and camps for students who oftentimes have the odds against them. \nGet tickets here.

SUMMARY:OBI Hybrid Lunch & Learn: Demystifying Commercial Real Estate Leasing
DESCRIPTION:This event is in-person for a limited number of attendees at beautiful CBRE in downtown Portland & also livestreamed on Zoom. View replay here. \nAbout this event\nNurturing your business in the confines of an incubator like OBI/OTRADI means you haven’t had to worry much about a traditional commercial real estate lease with a conventional landlord. But many of you will come to a point where you outgrow OBI and need to find your own lab and/or office space. But when do you start those conversations and how does it all work? This session is designed to demystify the leasing process and shed some light on the sometimes opaque and jargon-filled industry that is commercial real estate. Topics covered include: \n\nOverview of the commercial real estate landscape in the Greater Portland Region\nWhat can a tenant representative commercial real estate broker do for you?\nOverview of the entire process\, start to finish\, from contemplating a move to move-in day.\nWhat can you expect to pay? What’s the difference between a NNN and FSG rental rate?\nYou need a lab with venting hoods plus special plumbing for equipment: what might that add to the buildout / tenant improvement cost and who will pay?\nWhat are the various fees involved and who pays who?\n\nOne of OBI’s most prominent graduates is Sean McClain of Absci. Come hear from Kristin Hammond and Ajay Malhotra from CBRE Portland\, who Sean personally selected to represent Absci in the search for their new 78\,000 square foot headquarters in Vancouver. Kristin and Ajay\, three-time winners of the independent Oregon-Washington Commercial Association of Brokers Top Office Team of the Year\, will use their work with the Absci executive team as a case study to illuminate every step of the process and answer any questions you may have. \nAbout the Speakers:\nKristin Hammond \nKristin is a Senior Vice President in the Portland\, Oregon office of CBRE. She has over 20 years of experience working with leading firms in technology\, life sciences/healthcare\, education\, utilities\, financial services\, food/beverage manufacturing and supply chain logistics. She advises companies ranging from start-up to publicly-traded\, multi-national conglomerates. Her strategic guidance on requirements from major relocations\, build-to-suit construction and economic incentive driven opportunities has made her a “go-to” advisor in the region. Kristin has distinguished herself as a knowledgeable professional who can deliver the ideal work environment for clients. \nSome of her notable transactions in the area including Oregon State University’s 40\,000 SF downtown Portland career center; 77\,000 SF HQ for life sciences firm AbSci in Vancouver WA; 836\,000 SF of warehouse space across the U.S. for OIA Global; 80\,000 SF of relocation and expansion of a search engine firm in downtown Portland; and a major build-to-suit expansion of 195\,000 SF for a semiconductor provider in Hillsboro\, Oregon. \nAjay Malhotra \nAs a First Vice President at CBRE\, the global market and brand leader in real estate services\, Ajay serves companies with interests in Portland with custom tailored real estate solutions. \nAjay specializes in representing local\, national and international tenants who require services such as: \nOffice & Industrial Real Estate Brokerage Services\nLabor Analytics and Economic Incentives\nProject Management Services\nDatacenter Solutions\nWorkplace Strategy\nWith over 22 years of industry experience in high technology and renewable energy\, Ajay is a deep domain expert and brings a unique perspective when crafting real estate solutions with pertinent\, compelling advantages for his clients. \nAs a former senior executive at global brands\, Intel Corporation and Cadence Design Systems\, Ajay “worked on the inside” at large\, publicly traded companies and has a keen appreciation for the myriad drivers of corporate strategy\, talent recruitment and retention\, hardware and software development and domestic and international growth. \nAjay also had lead roles at startups in business analytics software and clean tech in both Oregon and California. As a result\, he comprehends the dynamics – and real estate requirements – of venture capital backed Silicon Forest and Silicon Valley startups seeking stability and sustainable growth as they expand their operations and footprint. \nDuring his own career\, Ajay has had extensive experience conducting business\, managing and growing organizations not only in USA\, but also across Europe and Asia\, especially in the UK\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, Spain and also China / Taiwan\, Japan\, and India. This multi-cultural fluency enables Ajay to be an effective partner to companies whose business interests transcend borders. \nEstablished and younger growth companies seeking a strategic\, informed approach to their real estate needs will enjoy working with Ajay to strategize a real estate plan consistent with their corporate strategy. \nThank you to our sponsor and host\, CBRE. \nCBRE’s Portland\, Oregon office has been serving clients since 1972\, becoming a dominant player in the Portland commercial real estate market. SUMMARY:Zapproved: The Myth of the Model Minority
DESCRIPTION:For AAPI heritage month Zapproved will be joined by community leaders Zhou Fang & Hazel Valdez as they share their stories navigating and debunking the model minority myth. \nWe will learn about how the model minority myth perpetuates a narrative in which Asian Americans are seen as a polite\, a law-abiding group who have achieved a higher level of success than the general public through a combination of innate talent and hard work. We will answer the question: \nWhat could be so bad about being part of a group that’s seen as successful? \nJoin Zapproved and our speakers for a candid conversation that speaks from the heart. \nWe invite you to submit questions and/or topics of discussion for our guests during your registration process. \nMeet Our Guests \nZhou Fang\nAs a DEI practitioner\, communicator\, leader\, public speaker\, advisor\, and advocate\, I bring my multi-cultural background into the layered Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Accessibility (DEIA) space. \nI believe that in order to make meaningful and enabling changes in communities\, we must focus on intersectionality and use human-centered approaches to achieve the goals. \nHazel Valdez\, Associate Director for the Oregon Bioscience Incubator(OBI) & OTRADI \nHazel works with the executive director on various initiatives including working with entrepreneurs and early-stage bioscience and digital health organizations on their facility and resource needs (equipment\, mentors\, events\, education\, funding\, etc.) as well as OBI’s DEI initiatives. Prior to joining OBI\, Hazel was the Operations Manager at PDXWIT and has been part of the tech community for over 11 years. Hazel is an ambassador for PDXWIT and sits on the board of directors as the board secretary for Saturday Academy. In her free time\, she loves spending time with her wife Crystal\, traveling\, trying out new food items from around the world\, cooking\, boxing (she’s a USA Boxing official)\, and spending time with their cat Maple. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Zapproved & Cinder - Gender Identity & Pronouns: One Non-Binary Story
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join Zapproved & Cinder for a conversation with Liana Avendano on gender identity & pronouns. \nGender is a social construct and gender identity is deeply personal\, but what does that even mean? How can a person simultaneously feel all the genders at once and no gender at all? What is the difference between gender identity and gender expression? \nGender is a complex subject and once you start learning about it\, it feels like there is an endless amount of information to learn. That is because there is! As language evolves and our understanding evolves\, we uncover more ways for people to be able to express their gender in a way that matches their gender identity. \nDiscover the way Liana has experienced being non-binary\, what it took for them to get there\, and how they find joy in their expression. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER\nI am a queer\, nonbinary\, neurodivergent\, Mexican\, child of immigrants. This is the lens through which I see the world and approach my work. I grew up in Los Angeles and have lived in Portland for the last 4 years. I have spent my adult life challenging the oppressive systems in place that create barriers for anyone who does not belong to the dominant culture. My goal is to create strategies that eliminate those barriers. I am unapologetically myself as I navigate patriarchy and capitalism and I will always advocate for those who experience the most persistent forms of oppression. I have worked in many industries including the service industry. I believe that this has provided a perspective that adds to my knowledge and skills in addressing inequities in the workplace. I will continue this work until there is no work left to be done. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:TiE Oregon: Women's Open Mic Night
DESCRIPTION:Open Mic Night is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from TiE Oregon Charter Members. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of an investor meeting with three sections: the pitch\, Q&A\, and investor discussion & decision. \nWho facilitates Pitch Club? \nOpen Mic Night is led by Heather Samarin\, a TiE Charter Member who is an investor and successful entrepreneur. \nWhat to expect?\nPlease minimally prepare for a 5-minute pitch. If time permits each person could get up to 10 minutes so be prepared for that as well. This can include a slides/ppt that will be presented from your computer. Directly after pitching\, Q&A and discussion will take place. \nThose who attend pitch club will have a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition\, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members. \nDetails:\nWhen:  Tuesday\, June 14\, 2022\nTime:  5:30 – 8:30 PM\nWhere:  Zoom Meeting\nCost:   Free for members / $5 nonmembers \nRegister here.
