SUMMARY:Zapproved: Turning Awareness into Action with Dr. Dana Crawford
DESCRIPTION:When the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor sparked the flame of racial consciousness\, many of us became more aware of the contemporary manifestations of racism. While awareness is critical\, knowing is only half the battle. Instead\, we must fan the flames of awareness until they ignite into a world forever changed. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Dana E. Crawford invites us to reflect on change that is not driven by the need for more awareness but the necessity of action. More specifically\, Dr. Crawford will discuss how to use the Crawford Bias Reduction Theory & Training (CBRT) to systematically reduce bias\, prejudice\, and racism. The CBRT approach helps participants move from being reactive to the manifestations of bias\, prejudice\, and racism to being mindful and strategic in responding. This talk will provide participants with concrete bias reduction skills that can be implemented immediately. \nJoin Zapproved and Dr. Crawford to discover: \nThe ethical obligation for everyone to strive to become bias reductionists\nWays in which bias\, prejudice\, and racism activate and manifest\nHow to reduce bias and respond effectively to challenging interactions\nDana Crawford (she/her/hers) – Pediatric & Clinical Psychologist \nDr. Dana E. Crawford is a pediatric and clinical psychologist who developed the Crawford Bias Reduction Theory & Training (CBRT)\, a systematic approach to reducing bias\, prejudice\, and racism. She has a thriving private practice in Manhattan and has treated patients with high incidences of trauma in Philadelphia\, Cincinnati\, New Orleans\, San Antonio\, the Bronx\, and New York. Dr. Crawford is a graduate of Howard\, Temple\, and Miami universities and has degrees in counseling\, African-American studies\, psychology\, and the arts. She has certifications in Practical Nursing\, medical hypnosis and biofeedback. She completed her pediatric psychology residency at Tulane University School of Medicine\, which was followed by a two–year clinical fellowship with the United States Department of Defense and then a two-year fellowship with the Center for Early Connections at Tulane University. In recent years\, she has worked with the National Black Caucus to create legislation for Black maternal health equity\, appeared on a number of news platforms. In 2020\, she has conducted over 60 trainings and presentations in private\, non-profit\, public\, and government sectors. Dr. Crawford is currently a Scholar in Residence at Columbia University in the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. \nThis event is sponsored by TechTown PDX who has made a pledge\, along with their member companies\, to collectively advance workplace equity and inclusion to help grow the tech industry. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Zapproved Event: Fire Side Chat with Minda Harts\, Author of the Memo
DESCRIPTION:How to support women of color in the office? \nInclusion starts with being aware that although we work at the same workplace\, we aren’t experiencing the workplace the same way. 54% of women of color feel more included now that they can work remotely. That feeling is generated because of the trauma they have experienced coming into the workplace. \nJoin Zapproved and Minda Harts\, author of\, “The Memo\, What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table\,” celebrating her recently released book\, “Right Within: How to Heal from Racial Trauma in the Workplace\,” as we have a candid conversation about the seen and unseen trauma in the workplace. Learn how we can support our teams and create a more inclusive culture for everyone. \n“Racial trauma in the workplace doesn’t have to be the norm\, and change starts internally. It starts with us activating our power.” ~ Minda Harts \nMinda Harts (she/her) is the CEO of The Memo LLC and an award- winning and best-selling author of “The Memo: What Women of Color Need To Know To Secure A Seat At The Table.” Minda is a Professor at NYU Wagner and hosts a live weekly podcast called Secure The Seat. In 2020\, Minda was named the #1 Top Voice for Equity in the workplace by Linkedin. She is an Aspen Ideas Festival Scholar and has been featured on MSNBC’s Morning Joe\, Fast Company\, The NY Times\, and Time Magazine. Minda frequently speaks at companies like Microsoft\, Amazon\, Nike\, and Bloomberg on topics such as Managing Diverse Teams\, Courageous Leadership\, and Advancing women of color in the workplace. \nThis event is co-sponsored by TechTown PDX who has made a pledge\, along with their member companies\, to collectively advance workplace equity and inclusion to help grow the tech industry. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Zapproved: Questions a 6 Year Old Would Ask About Disability
DESCRIPTION:When we were six years old we weren’t allowed to ask the questions we had when we saw someone with a disability or that looked different than us. We were told not to stare or to ignore the person entirely. This has led folks to think that it is shameful to have a disability or appear different. \nJoin Zapproved and Cinder for a conversation with Emily Purry\, who has lived with the stigma of having a disability her entire life.  Together\, we can break down the stigma and have an open conversation around disability. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Center for Experimental Therapeutics Lecture Series: Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts
DESCRIPTION:Monthly talks spotlight researchers engaged in discovering and validating therapeutic targets\, biomarkers\, developing novel agents and conducting clinical research.  \n“Cancer-associated Fibroblasts” \nSandra Orsulic\, Ph.D.\nProfessor in Residence\, Obstetrics and Gynecology\nUCLA David Geffen School of Medicine \nThursday\, Nov. 18\, 2021\n4-5 p.m.  \nCancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) can induce therapeutic resistance by blocking access of chemotherapies and immunotherapies and physically hindering the trafficking of functional immune cells to the tumor parenchyma. CAF-secreted transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) is a potent cytokine that promotes pro-tumorigenic CAF and immune cell phenotypes. \nStudies have shown that therapeutic efficacy can be drastically improved by co-administration of TGFβ-blocking agents. However\, targeting TGFβ has been associated with toxicity\, possibly because TGFβ is a pleiotropic cytokine expressed by multiple stromal cell types\, some of which are required for normal tissue homeostasis. Less attention has been paid to another member of the TGFβ superfamily\, Activin-A (encoded by the INHBA gene). \nWe showed that INHBA expression was restricted to CAFs and the normal placenta while other normal tissues did not express INHBA. Functional knockdown assays demonstrated that INHBA is important for the contraction\, proliferation\, and invasion of human ovarian CAFs in vitro. \nIn a syngeneic mouse model of ovarian cancer\, suppression of INHBA expression in the host fibroblasts reduced tumor growth. Multiplex immunoassays demonstrated that metastatic tumors enriched for INHBA-positive CAFs were also enriched for regulatory T-cells (Tregs). \nCo-culture experiments with human ovarian CAFs and naive T cells showed that Treg differentiation was dependent on direct contact with INHBA-expressing CAFs. Mechanistically\, INHBA/recombinant Activin-A in CAFs induced autocrine expression of PD-L1 through SMAD2-dependent signaling\, which promoted Treg differentiation. Considering the overlapping functions of Activin-A and TGFβ\, targeting Activin-A may be an effective method to inhibit tumor progression without significant toxicity to normal tissues. \nSandra Orsulic\, Ph.D.\nProfessor in Residence\, Obstetrics and Gynecology\nUCLA David Geffen School of Medicine \nThursday\, Nov. 18\, 2021\n4-5 p.m.  \nJoin Webex here at time of event
