SUMMARY:TAO Event: Profitability Through Stakeholder Alignment
DESCRIPTION:TAO Professional Development programming supports tech professionals by helping them to make connections\, develop expertise\, share best-practices\, and amplify their voices as members of the tech industry. \nA study of 200 companies authored by John Kotter and James Heskett in “Corporate Culture and Performance” showed that over an 11-year period\, stakeholder-balanced companies had four times the growth in sales and eight times the employment growth when compared to shareholder-focused companies. \nWith better access to information focused on a company’s values and actions\, today’s stakeholders are more sophisticated and savvy. Corporate responsibility is no longer just about philanthropy or publicity; it is a critical business tool. So as companies work to develop relationships\, inspire their stakeholders\, and create communities where everyone strives to give their best – they start to deliver to deliver a more profitable and sustainable business than companies whose focus is exclusively on the bottom line. \nTechnology Association of Oregon invites you to join our partners Willamette Valley Consultants and B2B CFO for a fireside chat with Xenium’s Vice President of People Development & Culture\, Suzi Wear on Wednesday\, March 31st from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. \nThe discussion will focus on how intangibles like trusting relationships with suppliers\, employee learning and growth\, reputation and goodwill are key drivers of corporate competitiveness and profitability.\n \n \nFEATURED SPEAKERS\n  \nGary Langenwalter\nPrincipal\nWillamette Valley Consultants \nLarry Strober\nPrincipal\nWillamette Valley Consultants \nFrank Dane\nPartner\nB2B CFO \nSuzi Wear\nVP of People Development & Culture\nXenium\n \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND \nThe topic will be most relevant to small and medium sized business owners and executives who need an intuitive\, workable plan for their company to achieve its goals\, and to align the actions and decisions of their teams to those goals.  \nABOUT WILLAMETTE VALLEY CONSULTANTS \nWillamette Valley Consultants are dedicated to improving the lives of their clients. They do that by understanding goals and removing barriers that get in client’s way. Their specialty is translating entrepreneurial passion and purpose into success. With offices in Portland and McMinnville\, they ask lots of questions to help entrepreneurs\, owners\, executives and managers get unstuck\, clarify options\, and see and hear the present and the future with a different and experienced set of eyes and ears. \nABOUT B2B CFO \nWe are “the alternative” to the typical professional services on an exit or buy transition. We use unique tools\, talents\, and processes to help the business owner(s) through the transition. Not only are our professionals qualified\, but we have published books and software to help with these transitions. We invite you to study this website to discover our unique tools\, talents\, and processes.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Licensing and Technology Transfer
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Lunch & Learn presentation on the topic of technology licensing\, with a focus on technology transfer from educational and other institutions. Josh Smith\, an attorney at Tonkon Torp LLP\, and Andrew Weinberg\, President of AgonOx\, Inc\, will provide their insights on: \n\nTechnology licensing basics\nDifferent types of tech transfer agreements\nPitfalls and opportunities in connection with technology transfers\n\nAbout the Speakers:\nJosh Smith and Andrew Weinberg \nJosh Smith is a partner at Tonkon Torp and a member of its Entrepreneurial Services\, Intellectual Property\, Corporate Finance & Transactions\, and Mergers & Acquisitions practice groups. His practice is focused on representing and counseling emerging and established companies on a wide variety of intellectual property\, corporate\, and transactional matters. He counsels clients on venture capital and angel financings\, mergers and acquisitions\, strategic alliances and joint ventures\, technology licensing\, commercial agreements\, and general business matters – primarily in the technology industry. \nPrior to joining Tonkon Torp\, Josh was the managing partner of Alto Law Group\, a boutique law firm focused on technology and emerging growth companies. He is actively engaged in Oregon’s startup community and a member of the Technology Association of Oregon and Oregon Entrepreneurs Network. Josh graduated magna cum laude from Lewis & Clark Law School. \nAndrew Weinberg earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Washington State University in 1987. Dr. Weinberg moved to Portland\, Oregon in 1990 to work at the VA Medical Center on an autoimmune model for multiple sclerosis (EAE) with Arthur Vandenbark\, Ph.D. and Halina Offner\, Ph.D. During the course of the autoimmune work Dr. Weinberg discovered that the TNF-receptor\, OX40\, was expressed on autoAg-specific T cells at the site of autoimmune inflammation and was in part responsible for their pathogenic properties. \nDr. Weinberg moved to the Providence Cancer Center in 1995 as an independent scientist to focus on tumor immunology. There he discovered that OX40 agonists were potent stimulators of tumor immunity in cancer-bearing hosts. In collaboration with Brendan Curti\, M.D. and Walter Urba\, M.D. at the Providence Cancer Center a human OX40 agonist was tested in a phase I clinical trial. \nThank you to Tonkon Torp for sponsoring this event. \nMissed it? SUMMARY:Saturday Academy: Zooming in on STEM Education Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:A VIRTUAL HAPPY HOUR OF DISCOVERY\nOn March 11\, 2021\, we will meet our friends and supporters online for our annual fundraiser to celebrate our accomplishments over the past year.  \nSaturday Academy encourages students to follow their curiosity. Serving grades 2-12 in the areas of science\, technology\, engineering and math (STEM) since 1983\, we have paved the way for students to build their confidence and explore topics of interest to them outside of the school day. In the past year our students have become drone pilots\, created animated movies and comic books\, dissected dogfish sharks\, learned to program\, presented scientific research from their internships and tried on various careers at local businesses throughout the community. \nWe offer unique experiences that are not readily available elsewhere\, and this year we managed to do so in the most challenging of circumstances. At the event we will celebrate our pivot from in-person to online classes\, camps and internships. We will “Zoom In” on STEM education and Saturday Academy by providing updates on our work and a sampling of our highly engaging online Microscopy Class. \nWHEN: Thursday\, March 11\, 2021 at 5 pm (or join us at 4:50 pm when a Saturday Academy chemist/mixologist stirs up our signature Discovery cocktail) \nWHERE: Virtual webinar \nRSVP DEADLINE: March 1\, 2021 \nCOST: Free or $50 for pre-event box shipped or delivered to your home \nTICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON FEBRUARY 1\, 2021  \nABOUT THE EVENT\nThe event with microscopy demonstration is free\, but if you would like to receive a foldoscope (microscope) and samples to view during the event\, along with dessert and the recipe for the Virtual Happy Hour of Discovery cocktail you can purchase a ticket for $50 and we will deliver or ship a pre-event box to your home.  \nScientific Discoveries using Electron Microscopy is a one class offered by Saturday Academy. Students choose their own samples and analyze them using light microscopes and then connect with a professional microscopist and analyze the samples using electron microscopy. We invite you to participate. Portable foldscope microscopes – lens capable of magnification of  ~140 – with a sample will be delivered to you for your own hands-on analysis.  We will show you the analysis of a similar sample in the electron microscope. Microscopy is an analog for science — the more you observe\, and with different instrumentation\, the more you learn. And much of it is beautiful. \nQUESTIONS?\nContact us at events@saturdayacademy.org \nIt’s not too late to serve as a sponsor for the event. If interested\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:TiE Pitch Club: Mock Investor Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Pitch Club is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from TiE Oregon Charter Members. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of an investor meeting with three sections: the pitch\, Q&A\, and investor discussion & decision.. \nWho facilitates Pitch Club? \nPitch Club is organized by Kari Naone\, TiE Oregon Executive Director and led by Tom Kingsley\, a TiE Charter Member who is an investor and successful entrepreneur. \nWhat to expect? \nEach attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation. (This can include a power point projection that will be presented from your computer.) Directly after pitching a five-minute Q&A will take place\, followed by a five-minute Investor Discussion & Decision). \nThose who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition\, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members.
