SUMMARY:Center for Experimental Therapeutics Virtual Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Development of Chinese Herbal Medicine as a Modulator of Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer \nPHY906 is a Chinese herbal medicine that has been used for nearly 2\,000 years. This herbal medicine was selected based on the historical documentation in the Chinese literature of its use to treat a wide range of GI ailments\, including diarrhea\, nausea/vomiting\, and abdominal cramps\, as well as extensive preclinical and clinical data we have gathered in recent years on its potential efficacy and molecular mechanisms of this medicine. While there had been extensive use of this herbal medicine\, prior to our research\, there was no product made under highly controlled and standardized methods nor had attempts been made to ensure quality control. With this in mind\, our group focused our initial efforts on developing a rigorous standard operating procedure to produce cGMP material as well as develop highly sensitive chemical (LC-MS) and biological (gene expression) fingerprinting methodologies to ensure quality control and consistency of batch preparation. Using high quality cGMP material that has been confirmed to be free of heavy metals and contaminants\, we have conducted phase I and II clinical studies investigating the role of PHY906 as a modulator of irinotecan-based chemotherapy and have shown that it can reduce toxicity\, maintain and even improve quality of life\, and improve clinical efficacy. \nPresented by Edward Chu\, M.D.\, M.M.S.\nDirector\, Albert Einstein Cancer Center\nVice President for Cancer Medicine\, Montefiore Medicine \nJoin here

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Counterfeit Medicines & Drug Importation
DESCRIPTION:Counterfeit Medicines & Drug Importation: Impact on Bioscience Innovation \nMissed it? Watch the recording of this program on our YouTube Channel. \nPlease join us for a Lunch & Learn presentation on the ways in which innovation in scientific research is impacted by the illicit distribution of counterfeit medicines in the United States and the wholesale importation of medications from other nations.  \nFor nearly twenty years people have suggested bulk exporting Canada’s drug supply to the U.S. to address problems in the U.S. healthcare system. These policies can have significant impacts on the future of innovation and our ability to keep our medicine supply safe.  During this Lunch & Learn\, U.S. and Canadian experts will offer insights into state policy proposals that would allow for the wholesale importation of medicines from Canada\, the workability of these proposals and the current processes in place that ensure access to safe medications.  \nAbout the Speakers:\nShabbir Imber Safdar\, Dani Peters\, and Lev J. Kubiak \nShabbir Imber Safdar has been at the Partnership for Safe Medicines for over a decade and was tapped to lead it in 2017. The Partnership\, founded in 2003\, is a not for profit focused entirely on researching the danger of counterfeit drugs in America and educating the public about how to stay safe from them. Shabbir is passionate about patient safety and the dangers of counterfeits\, having seen them firsthand the dangers of counterfeits in countries around the world where a closed\, secure drug supply chain doesn’t exist. \nDani Peters is President of Magnet Strategy Group\, a consulting firm that manages public affairs strategies in Canada and the United States. Dani serves as a Principal Advisor to the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies in Canada. The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies is a global non-profit organization dedicated to combating illegal online pharmacies and falsified medicines to make the internet safer for consumers worldwide. \nPrior to founding Magnet Strategy Group\, Dani held senior roles in public affairs firms in the U.S. and Canada\, concentrating on fields that include innovation\, health and life sciences. Dani is also co-founder of the Cross-Border Health Foundation\, an organization that fosters dialogue between Canada and the United States around common health priorities. \nLev J. Kubiak is Vice President and Chief Security Officer for Pfizer globally. He oversees Pfizer’s security resources whose mission is defined by three pillars: \n\nProduct Integrity for Patient Safety\nFraud and Asset Recovery\nColleague and Site Security\n\nLev joined Pfizer in 2016 after 23 years in the Department of Homeland Security where he directed HSI’s International Operations\, leading over 400 law enforcement personnel operating in 66 offices in 47 countries from 2014-2016. The event convenes movers and shakers with different types of businesses\, different science backgrounds from low to high tech\, and non-traditional funding and support expertise. \nWe’ll dive into their journeys\, learn about their career path\, challenges\, triumphs\, and the resources they couldn’t do without. We want to inspire and empower you to innovate\, to brave the entrepreneur journey\, and connect you with other women science-badasses\, allies and local companies\, partners\, and mentors who can help launch an idea into the market. \nMore about the event …\nModerator Lindsey Murphy\, of Crazy Aunt Lindsey and founder of The Fab Lab\, will lead us through the exploration of how these badass women have taken their innovative ideas\, rooted in science and tech\, from just an idea to a fully implemented business. They’ll share their journey and insights; including when their business or tech idea originated\, their first steps to the formation of their company\, early funding pathways\, navigating partnership legalities\, valuable resources\, and reflections on challenges they have overcome. \nWe will then be joined by another panel of professionals who will elaborate on the funding pathways mentioned by our badass women entrepreneurs\, along with a tease into their very specific funding resource. \nThen stick around for SPEED NETWORKING. This will be several 3-minute breakouts where you’ll get the chance to connect with panelists and attendees. This session is introvert friendly – short and sweet. SUMMARY:OHSU Invent-a-thon Post-Hack
DESCRIPTION:Watch rising stars in digital health and med-tech compete for $40\,000 in prizes plus in-kind support. \nFour dozen teams\, each with an idea of how to address one of four big needs in healthcare\, were born at the OHSU Invent-a-thon last October. Over half are still developing the ideas that emerged that weekend\, many in accelerators or connected to advisors met at Invent-a-thon. \nSix months later\, the most investment-ready teams will return to the virtual stage to share their vision with the world and compete for follow-on funding and support. Partner investor groups include AngelMD\, Elevate Capital\, Angel Capital Association\, Portland Seed Fund\, Aventurine\, and TiE Oregon.  \nYou’re invited to cheer on the finalists as they present their big plans in the hopes of getting cash prizes of $20k\, $15k\, and $5k\, plus mentorship and guidance from investors — and then celebrate the winners! \n  \nRegister now\n  \nWednesday\, April 21\, 3–6 Pacific\, online  \n3–3:30 PM: Introduction and keynotes by Patti White (Hemex Health)\, CJ Swamy and Rishi Madhok (Kiddo)\, and Dom Raban (Xploro) \n3:30–5 PM: Pitches + Q&A\, ten minutes per team (7 minute pitch\, 3 minutes Q&A)\, 6–8 teams \n5–5:30 PM: SpatialChat “virtual hallway” networking as the judges deliberate \n5:30–6 PM: Winners announced and celebrated \n  \nThe event kicks off with brief keynotes from three inspiring startups\, each directly addressing Invent-a-thon 2020 themes. Hemex Health touches both early disease detection and rural health care with fast\, low-cost\, high-quality malaria and hemoglobin disorder detection. Kiddo’s bracelet monitors vital signs to inform parents when children with chronic conditions might need medical attention. And Xploro uses augmented reality\, gameplay and artificial intelligence to deliver health information to young patients in an empowering and fun way. \nWe promptly move on to the pitches\, where each team gets seven minutes to present their project and make the case for funding and support\, and then three minutes of Q&A with the judges. Then we make efficient use of time while the judges deliberate with a “virtual hallway” networking session\, where you can start or pop between spontaneous conversations with entrepreneurs\, investors\, and enthusiasts\, as if you were milling on a conference floor. \nAll are welcome at the Post-Hack\, from past Invent-a-thon attendees to anyone who’s simply curious to see a glimpse of the future of digital health and med-tech.
