SUMMARY:Built Oregon Presents PitchBlack 2023
DESCRIPTION:Elevating\, amplifying\, and supporting Black businesses \nThe PitchBlack pitch competition gives Black entrepreneurs a platform to connect with the broader startup ecosystem — while also awarding them with cash prizes to help their concepts flourish. \nThis year’s event will be held at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts – the first time the event has been held on the west side of the metro area. \nWhat if the ‘Whitest City in America’ led the way in bridging the support and amplification of Black-owned businesses? What if the capital talks shift from simply being about money and moved toward the importance of social capital as well? \nThose ideas led Stephen Green to launch the first PitchBlack in Portland\, Oregon\, in 2015\, and since that time\, Portland has been home to five editions of the event. \nAnd this is only the beginning. What started in Portland has expanded to include events in Seattle\, Austin\, and Philadelphia. To date\, 100 founders have pitched their ideas\, more than 1000 people have attended the combined events\, and more than $100\,000 has gone directly to the winning companies. \nIn addition\, the Portland winners alone have gone on to raise an additional $40M in funding since 2015. \n“What started a party to celebrate some founders has grown into a beacon for how cities around the country can unearth\, connect and lift up the talent that already exists in their midst.” – Stephen Green \nGet tickets here.

SUMMARY:Workshop: The Return-to-Office Summit - Recruiting and Engagement in the Post-COVID World
DESCRIPTION:This intimate conference is designed for Recruiters\, Talent Acquisition Pros\, HR Business Partners\, Org Dev\, DEI and Belonging\, and executive leadership\, but all with an interest in employee engagement and corporate culture are welcome. \nJoin us at the Return-to-Office Summit in beautiful Bend\, Oregon\, for a candid discussion about recruitment\, engagement and retention in a post-COVID world. Seating is limited to 130 attendees\, so grab your tickets now! \n___________________________________ \nHow do organizational leaders navigate this brave new world\, and create effective recruiting\, engagement\, and retention strategies? \nFeatured Speakers List and Agenda to be released by mid-November 2022. \nTopics Include: \nAdjusting back to the office\nEmbracing Change: Managing Employee Expectations in the New World of Work\nWorkplace Pet Peeves\nChange Management\n___________________________________ \nKEYNOTE SPEAKER \nMelissa Mizell \nPrincipal and Design Director \nGensler Portland \nMelissa is a Principal and Design Director at Gensler Portland with over 20 years of experience in workplace\, aviation\, retail\, higher-education\, and hospitality design. She believes that great spaces come as a result of designing with the user point-of-view in mind\, and this is reflected in her work across many project types – aviation\, workplace\, higher-education\, and retail spaces. \nMelissa is recognized for her collaborative design approach\, engaging the client and team to bring out the heart and soul of each project. \n___________________________________ \nWHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? \n“The pandemic brought the future of work into the present of work\,” said Anthony Klotz\, a management professor at Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School. \nThe move to remote work and changes in job flexibility may not have occurred for another 30 years if not for the crisis\, he explained. \nWhile shutdowns meant a quick move to working from home\, many employees aren’t returning to the office full time\, if at all\, as restrictions are relaxed. Others can work from anywhere in the world or just four days a week. Some even have secured flexibility around the hours they work. \n“We are not going back to the world of work in 2019”\, Klotz said. \nBecause these work arrangements give us more flexibility and control over our lives\, and more autonomy and freedom in how we structure our lives\, I don’t think most people are willing to go back to a traditional work environment\, he said. \n“The new changes are here to stay”\, Klotz added. \n_________________________________________ \nWe look forward to seeing you there! SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Diversity in Clinical Trials
DESCRIPTION:Oregon is home to more than 500 active clinical trials with nearly 9\,000 Oregonians participating\, creating thousands of jobs and a more than $450 million economic impact for the state. Recruiting participants in clinical trials is a key factor for clinical research success and the diversity of participants plays a critical role. However\, enhancing diversity in clinical trials is a challenge for many Oregon clinical trial researchers. \nIn our panel discussion\, we’ll be bringing together an Oregon clinical researcher and a representative from the biopharmaceutical industry to explain some of the challenges of engaging diverse participants and the efforts to address the systemic barriers that can deter underserved communities from participating. \nView recording here. \nAbout the Panelists: \nMary Nwokedi\, PharmD; Director of Diversity in Clinical Trials\, PhRMA \nMary Nwokedi is a pharmacist by training and is currently the Director of Diversity in Clinical Trials at PhRMA\, the U.S. industry association representing the country’s leading innovative biopharmaceutical research companies devoted to discovering and developing medicines that enable patients to live longer healthier\, and more productive lives. In this role\, she has worked on Clinical Trial Diversity initiatives that aim to bridge the gap between patients and novel drug development programs. \nMary started off her career in molecular cardiovascular research at Temple School of Medicine and has publications in Nature and the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. \nMary holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Howard University (Washington D.C.). She studied Health Policy abroad in Pretoria\, South Africa\, and worked with the Southern African Development Committee (SADC) to compile a report on the regulatory gap capacity issues that exacerbate inadequate access to medicine to patients in the 13 southern African member nations. She also took a short-term study assignment in UK to study payer models and the impact of policies that impact market access. \nPost-pharmacy school\, Mary accepted a post-doctoral fellowship at Eli Lilly in Global Regulatory Policy and Strategy. SUMMARY:OEN Pub Talk: Exit Strategies Realized... Now What?
DESCRIPTION:So what does it mean to exit your startup? For some entrepreneurs\, an ‘exit strategy’ is planned from day one with the goal of cashing out at some point by selling ownership of the business to either investors or acquisition by another company. For some founders\, the goal is to create the “unicorn” company and go for the IPO. For other entrepreneurs\, the decision to exit may come after a certain amount of time or a change in life situations requires the sale of their equity in the company. \nOEN is bringing FOUR founders together to talk about building a business (or two!) that has achieved a successful exit. Oh\, and they will elaborate on what a ‘successful exit’ means to them while going into the nitty gritty details of what happens to actually (and FINALLY) leave the ‘main stage’ that is their business. This is the LAST PubTalk of 2022 and the best way to EXIT the year!!! \nAnd because OEN likes a theme\, please plan on your finest holiday sweater for this event. Fuzzy\, sparkling\, jingling\, or glittered sweaters that can truly only be worn once a year are WELCOME at this year-end event. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Zapproved event: Inclusion That Moves You
DESCRIPTION:This year Zapproved has focused on action. We started with turning awareness into action\, then we workshopped creating our own personal equity roadmaps\, and then we learned how to hold ourselves accountable to these actions. \nAnd now we will be joined by the Infinite Flow Dance Company to remind us that taking action is more than words and workshops\, it requires you to get moving in the right direction. We want to awaken you to the infinite possibilities of disability inclusion. \n1 in 4 Americans\, that is 61 million Americans have a disability. Disability is the one minority group that anyone can enter at any given time. Yet\, disability is often either forgotten or mentioned last in the conversation of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. Led by Marisa Hamamoto\, founder of Infinite Flow\, a professional dance company that employs disabled and nondisabled dancers with diverse\, intersectional identities with a mission to dismantle biases and promote inclusion\, and joined by a few Infinite Flow artists\, this will be a soul-filling conversation destigmatizing and demystifying disability\, and how each of us can be an ally to one another. \nWe would like to thank TechTown for sponsoring our 2022 Ally Lunch & Learn series. We appreciate your support the last two years and value you as a partner bringing amazing folx to the stage to take the mic! \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Lunch & Learn: Commercial Real Estate Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Watch recording here. \n\n\nLife Post-OBI: My Very Own Lab and Office – YES! But Where Do I start?? \nIncubating in the warm comfort and embrace of OBI is a very special privilege and a largely straightforward\, stress free experience. OBI works hard to insulate you from lease details\, NNN charges and maintenance issues and generally keeping the lights on and hoods working. But the day may come when your company’s ambitions and growth trajectory leads you to need or simply want your very own private lab and office. \nCBRE helps you navigate the whole process\, start to finish\, when taking that next step. Our CBRE partners Kristin Hammond and Ajay Malhotra are very resourceful and were tapped by AbSci founder and CEO Sean McClain\, one of OBI/OTRADI’s most prominent graduates\, to help them find their stunning global headquarters. Property surveys\, proposals\, Letters of Intent\, leases\, rental rates\, security deposits\, tenant improvement allowances\, out-of-pocket costs\, building amenities\, renewal and expansion options are all demystified at this casual Q&A session where you can learn what to expect and who can guide you when you embark on this journey for yourself. \n\n\n\n\n  \nAbout the Speakers: \n\n\n\n\nKristin Hammond \nKristin is a Senior Vice President in the Portland\, Oregon office of CBRE. Kristin has distinguished herself as a knowledgeable professional who can deliver the ideal work environment for clients. \nSome of her notable transactions in the area including Oregon State University’s 40\,000 SF downtown Portland career center; 77\,000 SF HQ for life sciences firm AbSci in Vancouver WA; 836\,000 SF of warehouse space across the U.S. for OIA Global; 80\,000 SF of relocation and expansion of a search engine firm in downtown Portland; and a major build-to-suit expansion of 195\,000 SF for a semiconductor provider in Hillsboro\, Oregon. \n\n\n\n\nAjay Malhotra \nAs a First Vice President at CBRE\, the global market and brand leader in real estate services\, Ajay serves companies with interests in Portland with custom tailored real estate solutions. \nAjay specializes in representing local\, national and international tenants who require services such as: \n\nOffice & Industrial Real Estate Brokerage Services\nLabor Analytics and Economic Incentives\nProject Management Services\nDatacenter Solutions\nWorkplace Strategy\n\nWith over 22 years of industry experience in high technology and renewable energy\, Ajay is a deep domain expert and brings a unique perspective when crafting real estate solutions with pertinent\, compelling advantages for his clients. \nAs a former senior executive at global brands\, Intel Corporation and Cadence Design Systems\, Ajay “worked on the inside” at large\, publicly traded companies and has a keen appreciation for the myriad drivers of corporate strategy\, talent recruitment and retention\, hardware and software development and domestic and international growth. \nAjay also had lead roles at startups in business analytics software and clean tech in both Oregon and California. As a result\, he comprehends the dynamics – and real estate requirements – of venture capital backed Silicon Forest and Silicon Valley startups seeking stability and sustainable growth as they expand their operations and footprint. \nDuring his own career\, Ajay has had extensive experience conducting business\, managing and growing organizations not only in USA\, but also across Europe and Asia\, especially in the UK\, Germany\, France\, Italy\, Spain and also China / Taiwan\, Japan\, and India. The theme of our 31st annual OEN Entrepreneurship Awards is Exponential: The Power of Us. \nThis year’s theme highlights the breadth of the entrepreneurial community – from the intrepid startup founders putting it all on the line to the organizations\, service providers\, and investors who support them along the way. \nJoin the Oregon entrepreneurial community for a sparkling evening of connection and celebration as the OEN Awards makes its triumphant return in person\, with a grand reception and dinner at the Portland Art Museum. \nAwards will be given in Early\, Development\, and Growth stages\, plus three special categories: Exponential\, The Power of Us\, and Entrepreneurial Achievement. \nThursday\, November 17th\, 2022 at the Portland Art Museum \nPlay Your Way:\nAttend solo or host a table for your colleagues and guests! The OEN Awards are a chance to glam up\, reconnect\, and celebrate hard work and hope as we look to the future together. \nWhy?\nOEN has been helping build Oregon’s entrepreneurial community since 1991–that alone is something to celebrate! But we do it for the founders. So let’s come together to cheer all those teams creating the future in real-time. \nAward Categories \nEarly\, Development and Growth Awards – These core awards honor the best of the best in each stage of the entrepreneurial lifecycle\, based on financial achievement\, traction\, team\, and social impact. Three awards will be given\, one in each stage. \nExponential – Special category this year! This award will recognize a startup that uniquely embodies the theme by having made significant contributions to their community this year\, or by forging a business model\, product/service\, and/or culture that multiplies the success of other businesses\, organizations\, individuals\, or other stakeholders in Oregon or Southwest Washington. \nThe Power of Us – This special award will honor an individual community member – founder\, community partner\, investor\, service providers\, academic associate\, etc. – who has contributed significantly to the success of entrepreneurs in our region in 2022 through their work\, mentorship\, or support. The winner will be selected live by audience vote at the OEN Awards! \nEntrepreneurial Achievement – That this founder has led their company to success is a given\, but who also demonstrates outstanding\, ethical leadership\, fosters a great workplace culture\, and sets an example others want to emulate? That’s our Entrepreneurial Achievement winner. \nNote: Eligible nominees must be for-profit companies\, based in Oregon or SW Washington\, and incorporated since 2012. \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Zapproved & Cinder Voices of Equity: Backlash & Social Movements
DESCRIPTION:Within the last 5 – 10 years we have seen more visibility of trans folks in media\, more Women & Women of Color in government\, and large social justice movements. However this has been followed by the overturning of Roe v Wade\, weaponizing of “Defund the Police”\, fear mongering of “Critical Race theory”\, and the filing of over and 240 anti-LGBTQ bills… (Deep breath) There is something about this moment that feels familiar. A pattern that we have lived over and over again\, and that pattern is the backlash inevitably tied to social progress. \nIn order to make our way through this Backlash with our dignity and humanity intact\, it’s first important that we shine a light on how it operates on both an interpersonal and structural level. \nJoin Robin Brown\, Facilitator and Strategist at Future Work Design as she discusses the downward swing of the pendulum in the fight for equality and the strategies we can use to hold firm in the face of resistance.\nSpeaker Bio: Robin Brown (she/her/hers) is a Black\, Trans\, immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago\, whose work is rooted in advocacy\, equity\, and justice. Through her arduous efforts of overcoming the barriers placed in organizations by institutional oppression was born a fierce passion for working toward dismantling it. Driving her is the idea that we can design an equitable work ecosystem that encompasses us all regardless of social identity. She is grounded in her purpose and from this root of strength transmits an expansive peacefulness. Her perspective has gifted her with the skill to connect individual experience with systemic design\, and through the power of storytelling she provokes thought\, emotion\, and action toward institutional change. Robin builds deep connections in all the work she does\, from connecting the dots as to why our work makes an impact\, to creating meaningful connections with clients. Her way of building connections is quietly powerful. Clients love working with Robin because of her kindness\, unique perspective\, passion for the work\, and ability to hold the discomfort that often comes with these difficult yet highly important conversations where so much is at stake. \nRegister here.
